What is the most beautiful hike in the Dolomites?

Some of my favorite hikes and walking trails in the Dolomites and Val Gardena, ideal for a beautiful panoramic hiking holidays in the Italian Alps:

Beautiful trail around the Sassolungo and Sassopiatto

One-day trip: The Friedrich August path takes you around the impressive Sassolungo and Sasso Piatto and offers great views on the Marmolada Glacier, the Fassa Valley, Alpe di Siusi and the Gardena Valley. A shorter alternative of this tour starts out from Passo Sella by using the Sassolungo cable car to the Sassolungo wind gap, from there descend to the Sassolungo Hut and back to Passo Sella via Comici Hut and the City of Stones. From there you can get back to Selva by bus or even on foot.

High path in the Dolomites mountains, Italy

On the Sella massif there are numerous walking paths and amazing hiking trails. One of them is the High Path, the crossing of the Sella Massif from Passo Pordoi in the direction of Passo Gardena and vice versa.

From Passo Gardena you can hike up the Setus Valley to the Pisciadu Hut or reach the Pisciadu Lake (Lago Pisciadu). The hike can be continued up to the summit cross.

Lech dl Dragon

A wonderful and unique alternative is the hike to the stunning „Lech dl Dragon“, the Dragon Lake (Lago del Drago). This glacial lake only exists temporarily... it disappeared in the 1970s and only reappeared between 2003 and 2007. In 2009 it had almost completely disappeared.

Passo Gardena is the starting point for several hiking excursions. One hike leads up to the Gran Cir peak. In about one hour you can reach the summit cross and many choose to do this tour in the early morning hours to admire the spectacular sun rise over the peaks of the Dolomites mountains.

One-day hiking trip to the Puez hut

Passo Gardena is also the starting point for the delicious trail Dolomites High Path which leads northwards across the Cir mountain range to the upper part of the Chedul valley where you can decide to descend into Vallunga or continue the hike higher up to the Crespeina ridge. From there, the Dolomites High Route leads you past the Crespeina lake to the Puez hut. A short, rather steep descent takes you back to Vallunga and Selva.

Hike in the Vallunga valley

Vallunga can be easily reached on foot from our house. The easy hiking path and trip in Vallunga in Selva Val Gardena  leads through woods and beautiful meadows. At its end, the valley opens up wide: The "Pra da Ri" meadow has been reached.

Hike to Juac hut and Stevia hut

Right at the beginning of Vallunga there is the Silvester Chapel and from there a path leads back to Selva on a Cross Way Path underneath the Stevia mountain in the direction of Daunei. From there you can walk up to the Juac Hut in about half an hour. The path continues in the direction of the Puez-Odle peaks and the Seceda pasture leading past the Rifugio Firenze Hut and Col Raiser. Right there, you’ll find yourself in front of another hiker’s paradise with paths winding up underneath the Odle peaks to the numerous mountain huts. The Juac Hut is also an ideal starting point for the tour leading up the Stevia mountain. The view over the Dolomites is breathtaking.

The old Val Gardena railway trail

From our Bed&Breakfast you can comfortably walk to our neighbouring villages on the promenade that used to be the old Val Gardena railway trail. The walk to S. Cristina is 3km long, Ortisei it at an 8km distance. You can comfortably get back by bus.

These are just a few suggestions, don’t hesitate to contact us for further advice or for tips on other excursions, hikes and itinerary in the Dolomites (Italy).
